General K-12 Program Information

Michigan Tech SWE takes great pride in the K-12 programs it offers to its community. Various programs are available for students of all age groups and are outlined below. Please follow the links in the navigation bar to learn more about these programs and contact the Community and Campus committee to get involved. SWE is more than willing to cater a program to the needs of a certain group.

For the elementary school age group, SWE implements a girl scout workshop to introduce girls to careers in engineering and teaches them about famous female engineers. The Big Mac program is always a highlight for 4th-6th grade students. Students learn about engineering, teamwork, and efficiency by creating an assembly line to assemble Big Mac orders with felt burger pieces.

SWE also partners with various Michigan Tech programs to introduce engineering to middle school and high school students. The Get WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) is an annual event for middle school girls while Engineering Olympics is a competition for area high school students.

The furthest reaching program SWE implements is the Certificate of Merit program. This program awards 11th and 12th-grade girls nominated by their school with a certificate of achievement in math and science, in addition to provide them with additional information about careers in engineering, math, and science. Over 200 schools across Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota currently participate in the program.

In addition, the Community and Campus committee reaches out to the elderly in the community by decorating and delivering painted pumpkins and Easter baskets to residents of local retirement and assisted living communities.

Other Campus and Community Programs

In addition to the various K-12 programs SWE implements, the Community and Campus committee also reaches out to the elderly in the community. Every year painted pumpkins and Easter baskets are delivered to residents of local retirement and assisted living communities. If you know of a community who would appreciate these or other holiday favors, please contact the Community and Campus committee.

Girl Scout EventSun 3/2/2008

Thank you to all who attended the girl scout event! The girls and troop leaders really enjoyed the day and were impressed with the event. Around 30 girls participated in the event.
