This evening was our first general meeting: our annual ice cream social! We welcomed new members and welcomed back our returning members. Haley, this year's SWE president, told us a bit about the benefits of belonging to our section of the national professional organization.
To be considered an active member of SWE each semester you should attend 5 out of the 7 meetings, 1 activity, help make and/or sell SWEish-kabobs at Winter Carnival, and join one of the committees. A list of committees, descriptions, and their chairs can be found on the SWE website at swe.students.mtu.edu/committees.
The first 5 minutes of the next meeting will be devoted to committee meetings. This will give everyone time to find the head of the committee they are interested in joining, and meet him/her.
For new members: please fill out the Membership Information Form under the Members link on the website.
The next SWE event is Evening with Industry on Monday, October 1st. Freshmen are welcome! Ticket sales will take place in the MUB the week of Monday, September 17th. Sales run from 10 A.M. - 3 P.M., Monday through Friday. Tickets for SWE members are only $10. If you would like to help sell tickets, contact Emily, Stephanie, or Lea. Ticket selling will count towards your activity point!
Our next meeting will be in 2 weeks on Wednesday, September 26 from 6-7pm in Chem-Sci room 101. We'll be doing engineering design projects!
Roundtable with Dean of Engineering 5:00pm - 6:00pm, MUB Ballroom B

The Society of Women Engineers will be hosting a roundtable discussion with Dr. Tim Schulz, the new Dean of the College of Engineering. He wants to talk about how Michigan Tech can become a leader in educating women engineers, as well as methods of recruiting more women to Michigan Tech's engineering program. They also want to try and give SWE more university support.
Pizza and pop will be provided! Come out and meet the new Dean, eat some pizza, and help make Tech a better place for everyone here! This is an open event-- feel free to bring friends interested in the subject.
EWI Ticket Sales 10:00am - 3:00pm, MUB Commons

Evening with Industry tickets will be on sale in the MUB Commons! Be sure to get your tickets early for a chance to get a company-sponsored ticket. Go to the EWI Website for more information.
General Meeting: Engineering Design Projects 6:00pm - 7:00pm, Chem-Sci 101
Details
Today we had our Engineering Design Meeting! Our goal was to create a timing device that accurately measured 3 minutes in order for us to escape from our prison. We were only given 4 washers, a piece of yarn, a deck of cards, a bottle of glue, a water bottle, and a bar of soap. Congratulations to the winning team who were able to time 3 minutes exactly!
Brooke told us about our new SWE mentorship program. Everyone is welcome to sign up. Basically, it gives younger SWE members an opportunity to hang out with older SWE members. It's not required, but it would be a fantastic way to meet more of the members of SWE and have fun at the same time. If interested, contact anyone on Eboard.
Brent and Anna from the Concrete Canoe team came to talk to us about their group, and the opportunities available to be a part of an engineering project at Tech. They compete nationally and practice year round. They are looking for more people to join (especially female paddlers). It sounds like a lot of fun and you don't have to be a Civil Engineering major to be a part.
This Saturday (9/29) is the Sigma Rho fraternity's Mexican Fiesta. We've all been invited to this event, which will include food flown in from Mexico, sombreros, ponchos, and fireworks!
Reminder: Evening with Industry is this Monday, October 1st. The girls on the EWI committee have been working really hard to make this event great!
Head's up: Date Auction will be on November 3rd. Stay posted for more details.

Details
Good Evening SWE-sters!
Tonight we listened to a presentation by Dr. Barbara O'Kelly, the director of the Graduate Engineering Program at Michigan State University. She spoke to us about reasons to apply to graduate school, fellowships, and scholarships. She offered us great advice about writing strong applications. The information will be useful for all of us as we continue with our academic and professional lives. Some of the tips she gave were to put yourself in the shoes of the person who will be reading your application, make your successes stand out, ask for a peer review of your writing, make sure to follow all the instructions thoroughly, and to get to know 3 faculty members well enough that you could ask for a reference and for a critique of your application. If you'd like any more information about what Dr. O'Kelly presented, she can be contacted at okelly@msu.edu.
